Cuthbertson &. Cassian make a great success out of being non imitators. As well as designing superbly laid out racing machines they contrive to apply the very highest standards of industrial design to their work. Traditionalists may interpret this as a derogatory comment but it is intended to be quite the reverse.

As has been said many times before, G.R.P. allows the designer a far greater freedom in the shapes he can make than many other materials. It follows from this that the logical approach should be that of the industrial designer— what is my objective; what shape best achieves this? Though the rudder and the bottom of the keel were omitted from the drawings sent to us, we can safely assume from the bits we can see that the hull and appendages follow C & C’s usual practice; fine entry in plan but with U shaped sections in the forebody, full and fat back end and spade rudder; rakish keel.

This is a shape that adds up to a boat that is intended to sail fast but pays relatively little lip service to the 1.0 R. Worth noting is the small forward crew’s cockpit complete with its own instrument dials and the sensible way in which the galley has been located under it in order to avoid the loss of headroom being an embarrassment in the middle of the boat. Similarly the engine comes up under the galley avoiding an embarrassment from below.

The designers question whether this currently fashionable arrangement of cockpit with its attendant complications will achieve more than passing popularity. However, the size of this particular boat assists them in overcoming any internal discomfort.

The C&C 50 is a small recreational keelboat, built predominantly of fibreglass, with wood trim. It has a masthead sloop rig, an internally-mounted spade-type rudder and a fixed fin keel. It displaces 31,100 lb (14,107 kg) and carries 15,000 lb (6,804 kg) of ballast.

The boat has a draft of 8.00 ft (2.44 m) with the standard keel fitted. The boat is fitted with a Westerbeke 4-107 diesel engine of 35 hp (26 kW).[1][3] The design has a PHRF racing average handicap of 51 with a high of 33 and low of 72. It has a hull speed of 8.37 kn (15.50 km/h).
