1946 – Dear Mr. Herreshoff

I only have copies of these letters in my archives, the originals are at the Mystic Seaport Museum. It is a letter written by my Dad, George H. Cuthbertson, the first C of C&C Yachts to L. Francis Herreshoff. Mr. Herreshoff was a preeminent naval architect of his time that my father looked up to.

Dear Mr. Herreshoff,

… For as long as I can remember, my ambition has been to be a yacht designer. I am 16 years old, and expect to graduate from High School next June. My problem is to continue my studies with that end in view and I would greatly appreciate any advice you could give me. …

     and concludes

... If, in looking over the above mentioned design, you think I have any talent, I would be very grateful for any advice and guidance in getting started. Yours sincerely,

     And Mr. Herreshoff responded.

Dear Sir:

… In answer to your question about my opinion as to the best way to study yacht design, I would say by all means to get a job working in a boat shop…

... I think your sail plan is very good indeed.

I'm not sure Mr. Herreshoff's advice could have changed my father's course, since it seemed to have been predetermined. But I'm sure the advice confirmed what Dad knew in his heart, he was a yacht designer in making.
