1929 - Harding

George Harding Cuthbertson, even a story just in the middle name.  Dad’s Dad, Allan Edward Cuthbertson did well for himself, trained by a correspondence course as an accountant, joined Toronto Carpet Co., and became assistant to the vice-president, C. Victor Harding.

When Harding left Toronto Carpet to form Harding Carpets Ltd. in Brantford, Grandpa followed him. Grandpa had such respect for his boss, he gave his second son, the middle name of Harding.  Born June 3, 1929.  A.E.C. rose to be president of Harding Carpets.

I have somethings from Grandpa, his beaver fur top hat, and a couple of his cameras.  He was an avid photographer; his many albums now sit in the Ontario Archives, 4437 photographs plus other material.

Charlotte Elma Cuthbertson was a pianist, teacher and accompanist, played the organ at Victoria United Church, where she met George’s father, who sang in the choir.  She was an avid music collector and a selection from her collection now sits in the CBC archives.  Her writing desk sits in my front room.

Dad’s only sibling Hugh, his older brother had a difficult birth and a difficult life.  Grandma looked after him for the rest of her life, a certain tenacity she had that George would follow.

It is Grandpa’s visual eye and Grandma’s love of music that may just have given Dad that style and grace he would put down on vellum.
